Operation Mindcrime
About
Operation: Mindcrime is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Queensrÿche, originally released on May 3, 1988. Widely regarded as one of the most important concept albums in heavy metal history, the album was reissued in 2003 with bonus tracks and later released as a deluxe box set in 2006.
Operation: Mindcrime is a concept album and a rock opera that tells a dark and politically charged story. The narrative follows Nikki, a drug addict who becomes disillusioned with corruption and social decay. Manipulated by a secret revolutionary organization, he is turned into an unwilling assassin targeting political leaders.
The album’s powerful storytelling, progressive metal sound, and theatrical structure set it apart from traditional heavy metal releases of its era. Songs like “Eyes of a Stranger” and “I Don’t Believe in Love” became Queensrÿche’s first charting singles in the United States, helping the band reach a wider audience.
Operation: Mindcrime marked the band’s commercial breakthrough, reaching No. 50 on the Billboard 200. In January 1989, it ranked No. 34 on Kerrang! magazine’s “100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time” list.
The album was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1989 and achieved Platinum status two years later. Due to its lasting impact and cult status, a sequel titled Operation: Mindcrime II was released on April 4, 2006.
