About
Alejo Moguillansky’s playful film The Little Match Girl moves between the chaos of everyday life and the uncertainty of artistic production. On the one hand, there is the process of staging an opera that carries traces of Hans Christian Andersen’s famous tale The Little Match Girl as well as echoes of Bresson’s cinema; on the other, there is the Teatro Colón orchestra on strike, economic crises, and stories of resistance.
At the centre of it all are Marie and Walter, a couple struggling to raise their young daughter on the uncertain and insufficient income provided by music. As they try to sustain their lives under these conditions, they also develop ideas for staging the Lachenmann opera. In this way, the film turns this tribute to resistance into a dedication to a community of characters living on the margins of life.
