Pera Museum invites visitors to explore the exhibition By the Water: The Life and Art of Halil Paşa, which focuses on the life and artistic production of Halil Paşa, one of the most important figures in the transformation of painting from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, led by curator Dr. Özlem İnay Erten.
The exhibition focuses on Halil Paşa, a military-trained painter who brought together academic discipline and impressionist sensibility, while offering an in-depth exploration of the artist’s life and work - from lesser-known biographical details and his artistic education to his understanding of light and colour, his drawings, mastery of landscape and portrait painting, and his work across different georgraphies.
Visitors will embark on a visual journey which spans from the shores of the Bosphorus to the Paris Salon exhibitions and the golden hues of Cairo, while further exploring the archival documents, press clippings, and personal items from the artist’s family archive that are featured in the exhibition.
