We’re in Munich in 1967. The Frenchwoman Anne visits her journalist friend Katharina to spend the summer together. They roam the city—sitting in cafés, visiting friends, flirting, and hanging out at parties. Their conversations circle around love and freedom, affairs and money. Yet each new experience Anne and Katharina have morphs into something else: probing discussions about the possibility of women’s freedom, the costs of that freedom, and the invisible boundaries of a male-dominated order. Regarded as Germany’s first feminist film, The Cat Has Nine Lives also stands out for its French New Wave–inflected style, where documentary-like scenes intertwine with surreal interludes, and for its richly colored visual world shot in Technicolor.
