About
Ferhan Şensoy (1951–2021) was one of the most influential figures in Turkish theatre, known as an actor, playwright, director, and satirist. Renowned for his sharp wit, political satire, and masterful use of language, Ferhan Şensoy’s theatre uniquely blended traditional Turkish humor with contemporary stage expression.
Ferhan Şensoy’s artistic career spanned theatre, literature, and solo performances. In 1980, he founded the theatre company Ortaoyuncular, becoming a pioneer of alternative theatre in Turkey. His plays combined strong social criticism with sophisticated and intellectual humor.
Works such as “They Also Kill the Shahs”, “The Heroic Grocer vs. the Supermarket”, “Ferhangi Şeyler”, and “Goodbye Godot” are considered classics of modern Turkish theatre. Ferhangi Şeyler, in particular, became one of the longest-running solo performances in Turkish theatre history.
On stage, Ferhan Şensoy masterfully combined improvisation, literature, poetry, and contemporary political references, creating a direct and engaging connection with the audience. Themes such as individuality, society, power, and freedom were central to his work.
Leaving behind a rich legacy of plays, books, and unforgettable performances, Ferhan Şensoy continues to be remembered as the critical conscience and oppositional voice of Turkish theatre. His artistic legacy remains a lasting source of inspiration for new generations of performers.
