Şebnem Ferah

About

If one is to speak of a prominent female figure in the Turkish modern rock scene, without a doubt that name is Şebnem Ferah. Above all, she has a powerful voice, heartfelt lyrics, energetic stage performances, a loyal fan base, and she can also play the guitar.

Ferah was born in 1972 in Yalova. Growing up in a family closely connected with music and in a house full of instruments, she developed an interest in music at an early age. She picked up her first guitar in her first year of high school; during this period, she formed a band called Pegasus and performed concerts on local stages. Later, in 1988, she founded the all-female rock band Volvox. Sharing the stage with leading heavy music groups of the time, Volvox continued its presence in Bursa, Ankara, and Istanbul until 1994. In 1992, a musician who would later become one of the well-known names of the Turkish rock scene joined the band as a keyboardist. Although the group prepared some demo recordings, they never released an album and disbanded in 1994 with disappointment.

Despite its short lifespan, Volvox gave Ferah what she needed: the attention of professionals. The diva of Turkish music, Sezen Aksu, and her arranger/lyricist partner Onno Tunç watched Volvox on television. Shortly after, Ferah performed backing vocals for Sezen Aksu. In 1996, she released her debut album “Kadın.” The album included some of her best songs such as “Vazgeçtim Dünyadan,” “Yağmurlar,” “Bu Aşk Fazla Sana,” and “Fırtına.” Influenced by producer İskender Paydaş, these songs had a very clean and polished production, differing from the interpretations Ferah would later present on stage. “Kadın” achieved great success, followed by numerous club and arena concerts.

Three years later, Ferah returned to the music scene with her second album “Artık Kısa Cümleler Kuruyorum.” She worked with the same production team — İskender Paydaş and members of Mezarkabul (formerly Pentagram) — but this time largely moved away from artificial synth sounds. A successful rock album, this work had a more introspective character, influenced by the loss of her sister prior to its release. Although it contained fewer hit songs, during this period Ferah began to build an audience that did not merely memorize popular tracks but accompanied all her lyrics with genuine feeling.

Her third album, “Perdeler,” released in 2001, had a more acoustic sound. At a time when Turkey was still trying to recover from the devastating Gölcük earthquake, Ferah had also lost her father. Apart from the lead single “Sigara,” the album did not produce major hits. It also featured a collaboration with the Finnish cello rock group Apocalyptica.

Her next step was her fourth album “Kelimeler Yetse...,” released in 2003. Although considered a relatively weaker point in her career, the album included important tracks such as “Ben Şarkımı Söylerken” and “Mayın Tarlası.” Two years later, her fifth studio album “Can Kırıkları” was released, produced by Mezarkabul’s bassist Tarkan Gözübüyük, and revealed Ferah’s heavier, distortion-driven style. Following this album, a tour with extensive visual effects was आयोजित.

In 2007, the live double CD/DVD album “10 Mart 2007 İstanbul Konseri” was released. During this period, her stage team included long-time collaborators Buket Doran (bass guitar), Metin Türkcan (guitar), Aykan İlkan (drums), and Ozan Tügen (keyboards). She also performed accompanied by the İstanbul Symphonic Project.
